Stein On Vine, also known as Stein Music Co., located across the street from the Musicians Union, has been in Hollywood since the late 1940's. The store caters to professional musicians, specializing in new and used instruments, supplies and repairs for jazz musicians all over the world. Owner Gary Chen-Stein stocks all jazz instruments, including all brass and woodwinds, a large selection of violins, and specializes in acoustic basses, from 1950's Kays to 300-year-old Italian instruments. With skilled repairs done on the premises, Stein On Vine's full-time technicians can repair, rebuild and/or refurbish any acoustic instrument.
Stein's is world famous for the place where all the jazz greats "hang out," and its customer list includes Ray Brown, Cedar Walton, Alfred McKibbon, Freddy Hubbard, Billy Eckstien, Phil Woods, Benny Goodman, Stan Getz... well, basically everybody. For strings, reeds, mouthpieces, cables, music, instruments, repairs, etc., professional jazz musicians (and others!) making their living in or just passing through Los Angeles go to Stein On Vine.
